ENGLISH DEPARTMENT COMMUNITY

English Department Community (EDCOM) is a student organization established on June 28, 2001, dedicated to facilitate academic, creative, and organizational development among students of English Department Students at Universitas Sebelas Maret. Led by the president and vice president, EDCOM consists of seven divisions that function as its core subdivisions namely General Secretary Division, Treasury Division, Research and Development (RnD) Division, Student Affairs (SA) Division, Public Relations Division, ART Division, and Media and Communication Division.

  • General Secretary Division

Known as the right-hand of the president and vice president in running the organization, this division is also responsible for administrative affairs. The General Secretary has five work programs and five non-work programs. The work program begins with the collaboration with the president and vice president through RHT (Rapat Harian Terbatas), a monthly meeting involving members of the presidium. This is followed by Rapat Kerja, or work meeting, which brings together all EDCOM members to discuss the work program plan for one period. Next, there is Pelbir (Pelatihan Birokrasi) or bureaucracy training, a collaborative program with the Treasury Division, which provides training on bureaucracy, proposal writing, LPJ (Laporan Pertanggungjawaban) or accountability report, and matters related to correspondence. The Division also conducts Sidang Pleno 1 or 1st plenary session, where EDCOM members report on the progress of the work program for half the term and Sidang Pleno 2 or the 2nd plenary session for evaluation at the end of the period. Lastly, Musyawarah Anggota, or the EDCOM Conference, where the president and vice president present final report on the EDCOM’s performance, the election of the next EDCOM’s leaders, and revisions to the AD/ART (Articles of Association and Bylaws) may be discussed if needed. In addition to these programs, the General Secretary is also responsible for archiving and numbering documents, organizing EDCOM evaluations, assigning members to divisions to monitor correspondence needs, issuing warning letters, and managing the rental of EDCOM inventory.

  • Treasury Division

Not only serving as the left-hand of the president and vice president, merely managing and overseeing the finances of EDCOM, the Treasury Division plays a role beyond that. This division runs four work programs and two non-work programs. The first is EDCOM’s Jacket & Lanyard, which involves the creation of PDH (Pakaian Dinas Harian) or an EDCOM uniform and lanyards for all members. The next is DYP (Dig Your Pocket), a mandatory fund from all the current EDCOM members. This is followed by Pelbir (Pelatihan Birokrasi) or bureaucracy training, which is in collaboration with the General Secretary Division. Next, there is ED’s Entre, a fundraising to support EDCOM’s finances, typically carried out by selling food or beverages, and merchandise. Another significant program is ED’s Affection, a platform for providing aid funds and open donations to members of the English Department at UNS and their families who are affected by disasters or bereavement. In addition to these work programs, the Treasury Division is also responsible for managing accounting and reporting financial transparency to all EDCOM members.

  • Research and Development Division

As its name suggests, this division focuses on research and its practical application to help develop and hone individual potential, both in academic and non-academic areas. This division has a work program called ED House (Instagram: @edhouse.edcom), a national-scale self-development initiative open to all English Department students at UNS as well as the general public. ED House hosts two key activities. The first is ED Talk, a seminar or webinar that collaborates with experts in their field. Then there is the ED Challenge, competitions in academic and non-academic fields. In addition, in the EDCOM 2025 period, this division also launched a new program called ED Verse—a platform for sharing perspectives and broadening horizons. This program consists of casual discussions for English Department students to analyze literary works, both in the form of books and films. Not only does this activity deepen the understanding of literature, but it also aims to train critical thinking, public speaking, and team discussion skills.

  • Student Affairs Division

The Student Affairs Division is responsible for supporting and facilitating interpersonal relations among English Department students, particularly within the environment of the study program. This division also contributes significantly to the human resource management of EDCOM, including recruitment and internal consolidation efforts. Student Affairs Division organizes several programs, including Inauguration, which marks the formal beginning of the new cabinet term, and EDSPORT (edsport.edcom), a collaborative sports competition with the ART Division for all English Department students. Internally, Student Affairs focuses on member engagement through programs such as EDCOM Training Camp (ETC), and Share Your Day with EDCOM (SYDCOM) all designed to build bonds and encourage appreciation. It also contributes to EDCHAMP, which recognizes students’ achievements..

  • Public Relations Division

Public Relations Division serves as the liaison between EDCOM and external organizations, institutions, or agencies within and outside Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS). This division is also responsible for implementing several grand work programs, including Connected, a comparative study with other student organizations inside and outside UNS, EDCOM Wings Instansi (EWI) which involves institutional visits to gain insight into internships and professional environments, and EDCOM Charitable Folk (EDCHALK) a community service program involving social outreach activities such as orphanage visits and organized donation for those in need.  In addition, Public Relations Division represents EDCOM at official invitations and is in charge of managing collaboration proposals from both internal and external partners.

  • ART Division

ART Division is responsible for coordinating all activities related to the development of non-academic interests and talents among English Department students. It serves as a platform for supporting the growth of students’ abilities, particularly in the areas of music, literature, spoken arts (such as podcasts), and sports. Additionally, the division manages and supervises Noisy Folks (@noisyfolks), a music arts community under the ART Division’s supervision. ART Division manages several creative work programs that focus on developing and showcasing students’ artistic talents and interests. These include EDFLAIR a talent and interest survey for English Department students, ECHOED a podcast platform by and for the English Department community, EDSPORT (@edsport.edcom) a collaborative sports competition with the Student Affairs Division for all English Department Students, and ARTFEST (@artfest.edcom) a platform for students to express their artistic abilities through performances or art submissions, which are later featured in an exhibition.

  • Media and Communication Division

Media and Communication (MEDCOM) Division is responsible for managing EDCOM’s publication and digital presence (@edcom.uns), particularly on social media platforms. This includes developing official branding elements, producing promotional and informational materials, and creating content to commemorate special occasions to ensure that all EDCOM activities are effectively communicated and publicly visible. MEDCOM’s programs include the design and launch of the cabinet logo and official profiles, the production of the organization’s profile video KALEIDOSCOPE, and the publication of the digital magazine EDGEIST. MEDCOM also manages various social media content such as press releases, birthday posts, and commemorative posts for special days. In addition, MEDCOM creates content such as EDCHAMP for students’ achievements appreciation, GRANDE to congratulate graduates, and Staff of the Month in collaboration with the President and Vice President. MEDCOM also runs APROSECIATION, a monthly Instagram feature that showcases creative works from English Department students.
