MBKM Guidance for English Department Students, FIB UNS
Key Principle: MBKM Complements, Does Not Replace, Your Core Curriculum.
It is essential to understand that the MBKM program is not a substitute for the classical, foundational courses in English Language, Literature, Linguistics, and Translation that you take from Semester 1 to 6. These core courses form the non-negotiable backbone of your degree.
MBKM provides a maximum of 20 SKS that can be used for credit earning and recognition through practical, experiential learning. These recognized credits are classified under special categories like KKN (Community Service), Internship (Magang), and MBKM Elective Courses.
The courses you can propose for recognition are designed to apply and extend your English studies into specialized, professional, and interdisciplinary domains.

How to Propose These Courses for Recognition
The process is not about enrolling in these as regular classes. It is about demonstrating that your MBKM activity has helped you achieve the competencies equivalent to these courses.
- Identify Your Passion & Activity: Choose an MBKM activity (e.g., Internship at a TV station).
- Match with Learning Outcomes: Before starting, identify which of the listed courses your internship’s duties will cover. For example:
- Writing press releases → ENGLISH FOR PUBLIC RELATIONS
- Pitching story ideas → NEGOTIATION MASTERY
- Working with a production team → TEAMWORK and PROJECT MANAGEMENT
- Submit Your Proposal: In your MBKM proposal, clearly state: *”Through this internship at [Company Name], I intend to achieve the learning outcomes equivalent to the following courses: [List of 3-5 courses from the list above].”*
- Document Your Learning: Throughout your activity, use your Logbook to meticulously record tasks and reflect on how they relate to the claimed competencies.
- Evidence in Final Report: Your final report must provide concrete evidence (e.g., samples of your work, supervisor testimonials, performance reviews) that you have successfully met the learning outcomes of the courses you proposed.
Key Considerations for English Department Students
- Leverage Your Language Skills: Your proficiency in English is a superpower. Seek MBKM opportunities that specifically value and utilize this skill in international, corporate, creative, or academic settings.
- Interdisciplinary is Key: The listed courses (e.g., BUSINESS FINANCE, BIG DATA 101) allow you to combine your linguistic expertise with other fields, making your profile unique and highly competitive in the job market.
- Consult Your DPA and Recognition Team Early: The Recognition Team in the English Departmentis your primary resource. Discuss your plans with them and your Academic Supervisor (DPA) before finalizing your MBKM proposal to ensure a smooth recognition process.
- Think Thematically: You can design a single MBKM project that combines several themes. For example, a “Digital Tourism Promotion” project could incorporate ENGLISH FOR TOURISM, CONTENT WRITING, DIGITAL MARKETING, and TRANSLATION OF PROMOTIONAL TEXT.
By strategically using the MBKM program, you can transform your degree from a purely academic pursuit into a professionally-focused portfolio of proven skills, all while strengthening your core identity as an English studies graduate.
